ANA DIAS BATISTA

Buried Ventilators, 2021

On the shed's roof were five industrial exhaust fans: two wind-powered and three electric, coupled to fiberglass chimneys. In the concrete floor directly below the position that each piece occupied on the roof, holes were cut and ditches were dug. The ventilators were placed upside down, mirrored, respecting their original alignments. The dirt was returned to the holes, arresting the exhaust fans. The work was carried out by the same masons who had remodeled the space, and the re-covered surface received the same finish as the original floor. The shed once housed a printing plant and a garment factory, and is currently being adapted to host a small theater. The exhaust fans will remain buried under the future usages of the space.
